My insights on burnout

by Nancy Joseph – Thursday, 28 June 2012, 11:10 PM

My search for “teacher burnout” generated around 2.9 million results in 0.24 seconds, which seems to point to the amount of discussion taking place on the subject. The following points are the results of my research:   Causes of burnout (defined as emotional and physical exhaustion making the instructor lose interest in the job and in the students) can be internal or external or both.   A) Internal causes   1. Personal attitudes and value   2. Poor time management skills   3. Unhealthy life style and so on…..

B) External causes   1. Poor work atmosphere   2. Remuneration does not match skills and effort   3. Unrealistically high performance expectations from educational institution, students, etc. and so on…..   Like the causes, the preventive measures for burnout can also be internal and external   A) Internal measures initiated by the instructors themselves   1. Focus on student needs   2. Get support from colleagues when overwhelmed   3. Develop good time management skills   4. Sufficient rest and recreation   5. Daily exercise routine and so on…..

B) External measures coming from the colleges and other educational institutions.   1. Positive and supportive work atmosphere   2. Pay that matches performance and so on…..   Though both internal and external causes can be mitigated to a certain extent by the instructors themselves, the employing colleges etc. should also take steps to reduce workplace stress.

    1. It sure does, whether it’s burn-out in the work place or home life……it’s there..WE NEED to remember ourselves and make time for just us…It’ll go along way 🙂

      1. It’s so very difficult to put ourselves first when working in fields like nursing and teaching. It’s always about what the other person needs. Do you have ‘tricks’ that you use to help take care of yourself?

      2. I take time and go for a run… And take Jazz dance ….. When I’m in these modes I immerse myself .. Works every time ….:)
